Cyber Bullying in Second Life - A Step Away from Design for a Moment
*Updated (Scroll Down)
People tend to think of cyber bullying as something that happens to tweeners in the real world, on sites like Facebook and Twitter. But it happens in in virtual realities, and it's happening to me in Second Life.
We just don't really know people we meet online, not on Facebook, Twitter or virtual realities and, if we open ourselves up to be vulnerable, someone might exploit you. In real life, we have more radars in which to determine if we want to be friends with a person. Online, it's more complex, and involves massive amounts of trust, and once that trust is shared, and broken, the wreckage can outreach the realms of the Internet.
If you don't know what Second Life is, it's a virtual reality where people create avatars, rent land, set up house and do just about everything they can do in real life. If you want more information about Second Life, you can find information here. It's a wonderful place if you're creative, since the world of Second Life is created by the residents. It's what I love about Second Life, and why I began making clothes in late 2009, under Kakia Designs. In 2012, I began creating baby clothes the end of 2012.
And so does my nemesis.
How we went from friends to unfriends, is another story, but it shouldn't play a factor. People unfriend and unpartner people all day long in Second Life. Normal people should move on.
The woman in question has made a series of threats to me, many in SL and several via text messages, along with threats to contact my family in real life. Was she serious about real life? Probably, not, but when do we let it slide and when do we worry? Some of her threats she's carried out and continues to do so, such as spreading lies about me and trying to ruin my business, including soliciting a others and creating alts.
She publicly called me a whore several times, or sent her alts. She's a middle aged woman calling another person a whore. In all of my life, I've never been called that name. It's vulgar, it's demeaning, and it's the level of what people hiding behind computer screens thinks they can get away with.
I pisses me off when my store's name is mentioned in groups, publicly denounced and spammed. I work really hard to create beautiful clothing and really want a positive experience in my Second Life.
Now, Linden labs, the corporation behind Second Life, and has in place Terms of Service in place
8.2 You will not post or transmit prohibited Content, including any Content that is illegal, harassing or violates any person's rights.
You agree that you will not:
(i) Post, display or transmit Content that violates any law, or the rights of any third party including without limitation Intellectual Property Rights;
(ii) Impersonate any person or entity without their consent, or otherwise misrepresent your affiliation, or if you are an adult, impersonate a minor for the purpose of interacting with a minor using the Service;
(iii) Stalk, harass, or engage in any sexual, suggestive, lewd, lascivious, or otherwise inappropriate conduct with minors on the Service;
(iv) Post, display or transmit any material, object or text that encourages, represents, or facilitates sexual "age play," i.e., using child-like avatars in a sexualized manner. You may review our full Age Play Policy here;
Incidents under sections (iii) and (iv) above are grounds for immediate termination. You understand and agree that we may report any and all such incidents -- and any and all of your corresponding personal information -- to any authorities we deem appropriate, whether or not it in and of itself violates the law of your (or any) jurisdiction.
(v) Post, display or transmit Content that is harmful, threatening or harassing, defamatory, libelous, false, inaccurate, misleading, or invades another person's privacy;
(vi) Post, display or transmit Content that is obscene, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;
Now, based on this language, the person harassing me is violating the terms of service of Second Life.
It's my Second Life and I don't wish to live it this way. I've never known a person in there who didn't defuse and move on! And that is what makes it concerning, and that is why Linden Labs needs to get involved.
Finally, it's illegal. Just because someone is in a virtual world, does not give them license to bully anyone.
Regardless of what kind of friendship we had in Second Life, the point being, it was in Second Life and it falls within the framework of Linden Lab's Terms of Service.
So, I've blocked and muted and banned, and used all the tools that the Lab gives us in an attempt to stop the nonsense, but about every other day now I get some crap from someone or somewhere.
Now, she's copying my designs. I've reported that, too. It just doesn't end.
My next recourse will be to take legal action, starting with a restraining order. I refused to be bullied when I go to work, and Second is where I work. Linden Labs has given me all that I need to start this process, but it took a phone call. Their inworld reporting is not effective. Thankfully, they assured me that they know the difference between fabricated chat, or notecards devised, along with IP addresses identifying alts, and know that I'm a victim of cyber bullying and agree it has to stop.

May 20, 2013 Update and More Details:
I closed my Zooby Baby store, quit the affiliate program, left all the groups tied to it, trying to get away from this person.
Zooby isn't going to do anything about her, even though she's lifted all her textures from the Internet, including Gucci, Nike, Abercrombie Disney, etc. The burnout rate is high, without these bad business practices, at least five designers have quit this year, although I don't know their reasons.
I'm still hearing from people about the things she's saying about me, well, let her talk. How short her memory is that I was once a real friend.

Kakia goes Mommy & Me with Pat A Kake Baby and Toddler Clothing
After a close call with leaving SL forever after a massive inventory loss, I returned with new drive to switch my endevours to toddler and baby clothing...and some matching mommy & me's!
These are Zoobie clothing only, other than mommies, which are sold under mommie and me. I'm also selling various baby items, including furniture and decor.
Though it's early for spring, I've decided to jump into the warmer months rather than spend time making too many winter items (though I have some). This is the Newport serious (returning with a new design). This is a mesh dress for mommy. Standard mesh sizes apply.

1 Linden Soft Light Face Light
So... I've been away for awhile. Doing some super-duper re-eval of my Second Life life in general after my huge inventory loss that pretty much crippled my business. I so totally miss Second Life. Dooh, who doesn't? So, I decided to ease in slowly again and release some items that I'd been working on prior to the loss. One of the things, was a very soft face light. I hate face lights and have complained about their intrusiveness for years. But, many are addicted to them, so I decided to present a very soft light that I use in photography. I've tested it around the grid and it seems very low, and yet just enough to illuminate your face but not everyone else's Second Life experience. I hope you love it.

The Risks of an Virtual Business In Second Life
At the time I was using Phoenix's Firestorm, and Linden's Official Viewer. I suspect this jumping between viewers caused the loss. That said, assets servers should be able to restore inventory regardless of viewer used.
To say I was freaked out, is very mildly put. And, my knee jerk response, pitted against the clear and concise reality that to regroup would be complex, time consuming, costly, really was a week of madness. Denial, grief...acceptance that my hard built boat was somewhat sunk. Could I reorganize, regroup and move on, the way I suppose many in Second Life have done after inventory loses. Yes, and no. First, irregardless of whether "I could do this," the fiduciary responsibility of my inventory was Linden Lab's alone, as they give us no ability to back up our inventory. Our inventory is 100% in their care.
Regroup option:
I wasn't making much money as a fashion designer, and spending far more, and couldn't afford to re-buy everything. Asking designers to resend items from years ago, seemed daunting.
Thus, just before the inventory loss, I was burning out, a slow sizzle of discouragement to stay afloat in a rapidly changing Second Life fashion environment, and (for me) a defunct Market Place.
Reason not to regroup -- Changes:
Then the introduction of Mesh changed the fashion landscape. If you don't know Blender, or some other mesh making platform, and rely on the mesh creators, what you have is an influx of same style different texture clothing. It takes away the uniqueness of hand drawn clothing that might set you apart. I became very adept at making ballroom gowns, but how many ballgowns does the average woman in SL need? Probably, one.
It's a difficult industry to break into even if you're exceptional.
I don't want to flame out of Second Life with a grudge everyone has to hear about, and that's not the point here. I'm writing this to say its very hard to break into Second Life fashion even if you learn the skills. When you're on the fashion radar, and then lose everything you've done for 3 years in one fell-swoop, you stand back and think, "huh, what the hell was I spending my money and time doing this for when it could all go up in a poof of virtual smoke?"
I don't know. Maybe the pure seduction of Second Life.
Now what?:
There are 100's if not millions of online "games" and virtual worlds to take our attentions and money. Most come with satisfying customer service. When I lost some inventory on Castelville, Zynga sent me new items within 24 hours without question. They didn't ask me to do anything. No clearing of cache. No install new viewers. They just sent me the cows, and extra Zynga bucks for the trouble of losing a cow.
Linden Labs will continue to reign power over our virtual goods until the residents rumble, strike, and demand safe controls of our virtual items, or the laws force them to get their act together. Until then, residents will live in denial it could happen to them, continue their building, selling, sexing, and false sense of securities, and Linden Lab will take their money.
Undate: I have had many responses recently. Thank you residents of SL. Please read here for updates.
